Thoughts on "Through the Asteroids!"

WOOO!!! Game #4 in the 20 Game Challenge is COMPLETE. Such an incredible experience, from challenging math problems to seeing actual progress of my collection of Assets. I cannot recommend this challenge enough to anyone that wants to get after Game Development!
So, some details on what went well and what went wrong?
WHAT WENT WELL:
- The beginning session, the planning out of the game, went even faster than my previous game (Invasion of the Heart). I felt more confident after actually having a legit game done, I also have created a template that I use for my Game Development Document (GDD).
- The Art, not yet to the standard I want but I think it is very workable which is the important part. I am happy with how everything came out, especially the pilot as she was one of the main pieces that I wanted to do my best on. I will be posting the speed art of all the things that I drew over on my YouTube!
- New Programming, there are a few new mechanics in this game that were new and tough to figure out. Namely the Armored Mob movement and the asteroids exploding. Starting out, the Mobs would go crazy! Zooming at Mach 10 towards the player, popping in and out of existence lol. It was pretty fun trying to wrangle them down, definitely learned the hard way how distance works in Godot. As for the Asteroids exploding, it was not terribly difficult by itself, just the mechanic behind them working with everything else was what made it interesting, changing the collisions and ensuring that each shard of an asteroid or instance created only has 1 HP while the main one still has 2. It felt pretty cool once it all came together.
WHAT WENT WRONG:
- Initial Values, Still something I am hoping to revisit, but the randomness of the Asteroids and PopUp numbers flipping on spawn, I definitely could have done it differently. Right now, Asteroids Spawn and move towards a random direction with a lean towards the center of the screen (I think lol). Its another pain point I would like to revisit after another few games down the line, I felt like my knowledge of Godot was lacking to not be able to make the Asteroid movement have greater impact.
- Note Taking, In the beginning it felt fine but later on after completing almost 4 features in a single day the amount to write can get overwhelming. Proper note taking after every programming/art sesh is super important, I felt a little lazy on this one but also a note to go off of at the start of the sesh makes things go so much faster. I have a pretty mediocre template right now, need to look into a better one
- SOUND! This part of game dev-ing is probably my weakest, I have absolutely zero musical background and my asset collection for music is basically music loops from the awesome tracks Abstraction puts out. Probably going to focus in this department of dev-ing on the next game so that I can grow in both experience and asset collection.
OVERALL,
I am very happy with the outcome! Again I cannot recommend enough for anyone that wants to game dev to try out the 20 Games Challenge. The people and community behind it is awesome and I will always be thankful to them for letting me stretch my thinking muscle and having a place to do what I love. Thank you as well! For reading this post and (hopefully) playing the game :) Let me know what your working on! or if your in the challenge too! Now, as for the next game? Challenge #5 looks like it might be a run at Super Mario Bros!
